Celtic defence struggles and 2 more takeaways as Hoops suffer defeat against Preston

Celtic crashed to their first defeat of pre-season against Preston - and never really looked like getting anything out of the game.

Ben Whiteman scored the only goal of the game but truth be told, a fully sharp Preston team could have put three or four past a lacklustre Hoops side.

Ange Postecoglou will be frustrated with what was on offer from his players and it could make him even more determined to get signings in the door.

Vasilis Barkas made a great save from Ched Evans and then another from Scott Sinclair, although the former Celtic star could have had a penalty at that point.

He got in behind and Stephen Welsh dived in and caught him, but Sinclair stayed on his feet and had a go at goal only for it to be blocked.

Declan Rudd was in goals for Celtic but he never really had anything to do in the first half and that will have been something that frustrated Postecoglou.

David Turnbull did have a couple of long range efforts but failed to really cause any problems for the North End stopper.

Both teams made plenty of subs on 60 minutes and within a couple of minutes Celtic were behind.

Seanie Maguire got in behind and looked to go round Scott Bain who caught him and Kevin Clancy pointed to the spot with Ben Whiteman finishing it expertly.

Defensive worries

It's all well and good having young players in the team during pre-season, but three days before Champions League qualifying begins and it's a bit more of a concern when they're still the main men.

Dane Murray looked good in the second half but it was a tough day for Osaze Urhoghide in the first period. Greg Taylor was the 'senior' figure and even he is only 23.

Celtic want Carl Starfelt and he's likely to come in over the next couple of days but there's yet to be a guarantee that he'll be in the country for Tuesday's game.

With Kristoffer Ajer heading out the door it's likely to be Stephen Welsh and one of Murray or Urhoghide who start at Celtic Park and that's a real concern.

Preston were nowhere near a top side but caused constant problems and Vasilis Barkas was forced into a couple of big saves.

Lacking a cutting edge

Celtic saw a lot of the ball but couldn't get any real service to Albian Ajeti through the middle. The Swiss striker was on his own up front but never really did enough to get himself into the game.

Turnbull offered some sort of attacking threat and Adam Montgomery looked okay on the left wing but none of them really caused any problems for Preston.

Declan Rudd had one or two saves to make but even when Odsonne Edouard and Tom Rogic were introduced, there was no belief that Celtic would get anything.

Celtic need more from their big players and while pre-season is about getting minutes, it's not looking good so far.

Ange has his work cut out

He'll be desperate to get his new signingsin the door because all over the pitch it really wasn't good enough for Celtic.

Preston are early in their pre-season but it felt as if they could cut through the Hoops defence with ease and that's a major concern.

There was little bite in the midfield and Preston really dominated the game. Postecoglou cut a frustrated figure on the subs bench and aside from a couple of minutes in the second half, they really struggled to do anything in the game.

The one bright spark was Liel Abada getting his debut and he went close with a shot but he never really had much of a chance to show what he can do.

It almost feels like Celtic fans just need to accept what the case is going into the Champions League qualifiers and hope new boys can come in before August 31.
