Celtic copycat for Kyogo demanded as Japan icon stunned by Australia benching

Legendary Keisuke Honda has urged Japan to copy Celtic in how they play frontman Kyogo – as the striker was left out for a massive clash against Australia.

The Hoops forward is in red hot form and marked his return to domestic action last weekend with the opening goal against Aberdeen in a 2-1 win after being injured during the previous international break.

He limped off against China in September having started the World Cup 2022 qualifier but was benched to face Parkhead team-mate Tom Rogic and the Socceroos.

Free-kick whizz Honda, formerly of AC Milan and CSKA Moscow, is one of the country's biggest exports and with 98 international caps remains a Samurai Blue icon.

And he warned Japan that they're wasting a top talent by not playing Kyogo up front as he was then left out hours later when Hajime Moriyasu's team was revealed.

He said: "It's clear we are a better team with Kyogo Furuhashi in it and not just in it, but playing as a striker.

"For me, he would have been the key to success when we played Australia, but he didn't even start.

"He is very fast, can score goals and causes many problems for defences. He would be my first pick in the Japanese team.

"I have no idea why he hasn't been more utilised in his favourite position for Japan, you would have to ask the coach that.

"Personally, I am very surprised he didn't start the game and I hope he is going to be used in the future."
