Celtic confirm signing of defender Liam Scales from Shamrock Rovers

Celtic have confirmed the signing of defender Liam Scales from Shamrock Rovers for a League of Ireland record transfer fee.

The 23-year-old has signed a four-year deal with the Scottish Premiership runners-up in a deal worth in the region of €600,000 plus add-ons.

Versatile defender Scales has impressed during an 18-month stint with the League of Ireland champions after making more than 100 appearances in the sky blue of UCD.

He makes the move to Parkhead after the Hoops fell at the final hurdle in their bid to make the group stages of the Europa Conference League last night.

Rovers were beaten 1-0 on the night in Tallaght, and 5-2 on aggregate, by the Estonian champions Flora Tallinn on Thursday.

Wicklow native Scales had scored in the 4-2 defeat in Tallinn seven days ago, the latest of four goals he's scored in 32 appearances in all competitions this term.

Speaking to Dublin Live earlier this month, Scales insisted he had 'no regrets' about his decision to sign for the Hoops after an earlier move to Bristol Rovers fell apart.

He lauded coach Stephen Bradley and his management team and noted that 'my ability has improved' since making the step up to full-time football.

Scales' ability to play centre-half, left-back and left-wing back earned him a spot on the back-up list for the senior side for next month's World Cup qualifiers with Portugal, Azerbaijan and Serbia.

“Liam is a young player who has impressed us and is someone who we think has the potential to have a big future at Celtic," said Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou.

"He is an athletic defender who has the ability to play in a number of positions. Everyone at the club has been working hard to add depth and quality to our squad.

"In signing Liam I think again we have made good progress. We all look forward to welcoming Liam to Celtic and to start working with him."
