Celtic chief Peter Lawwell should choose next Scotland manager - Hotline

With Alex McLeish facing the sack the search for a new Scotland boss will undoubtedly throw up all sorts of names.

But it’s not the search that’s concerning Hotline callers so much as the searchers, as they fear the current SFA regime can’t be trusted to find the right man for the job.

George Fairgrieve, Edinburgh, said: “Chief executive Ian Maxwell must move fast to ensure Rod Petrie has a challenger for the SFA president’s post.

“As a Hibs fan I’ve seen what he did to my club - sold the family silver, replaced it with scrap iron and we dropped into the Championship for three seasons. We’ve had a revolving door on the manager’s office for years now.

“Petrie is not a football man - he’s a blazer and we don’t want yet another blazer in the halls of power.”

James Russel emailed: “Under Gordon Strachan Scotland started to compete again - one goal away from beating England and qualifying for the World Cup - until the SFA sacked him.

“We need to get rid of these clowns in suits at Hampden who know nothing about the game. I only hope and pray David Moyes doesn’t pop up as he’s a loser for a living.”

Dunky Robertson, London, said: “As to why Alex McLeish was even given the manager’s job in the first place beggars belief. He was as handy as a one-legged man at an a***-kicking contest.”

So if not the SFA hierarchy, who would you trust to appoint a new manager?

Can imagine a few people having an issue with this suggestion from Gordon Ashley, Ayr, who said: “With Celtic now the biggest club in the country by a distance it should be left to them to find a new Scotland manager.

“The SFA cannot be trusted and we should take advantage of Peter Lawwell’s standing at ECA level to attract a big name.”

And if you think that’s a wild suggestion, Drew Ferguson, Oban, added: “Why don’t we just appoint the great sage Michael Stewart as Scotland manager as he seems to have all the answers while calling for people to lose their jobs.”

Jim Marshall, Edinburgh, said: “It might never happen but it would be better if some of the Scottish clubs would stop the foreign imports and short term loans and just gave the opportunity to their young players. Then we might have more quality players for the national team to choose from.”

Bill Park, Bathgate, said: “At one time to be a football internationalist you needed to have something extra from the norm to get capped. Not now, it seems, when you have players like Graeme Shinnie, Liam Palmer, Oli McBurnie, Stephen O’Donnell and Barry Bannan appearing in Scotland jerseys.

“Time for McLeish, McFadden and Grant to go - the logical step is to promote Scot Gemmill from the Under 21s, with his own choice of assistant.”

John Burke, Condorrat, said: “I’d like to know how much this pay off is going to be if McLeish, McFadden and Grant are all to be given the heave. The Tartan Army deserve the truth from the SFA.”

Elsewhere, David Moyes has expressed interest in a different job from the Scotland gig and Joe Docherty, Coatbridge, having none of it.

Joe said: “I see Moyes touting himself for the job at Parkhead. This guy has to be one of the worst managers to ever take a wage.

“He murdered Manchester United with a playing style as dour as his demeanour and if he gets the Celtic job there will be a mass exodus.”

A happier Celtic fan is Stevie Delaney, St Andrews, who said: “Fantastic news that Leigh Griffiths is returning to training as he’s been sorely missed at Celtic and Scotland. Hopefully he settles back in and makes the team before the season ends.”

Finally, Ronnie Knox, Tullibody, said: “Before Steven Gerrard signs any more rubbish in the summer are there no young players ready to come through from the academy? It’s about time Rangers had more Scottish identity in the team.”
