Celtic chief Peter Lawwell front and centre at crunch summit on European football's future

Celtic chief Peter Lawwell was pictured in Amsterdam on Monday for a crunch summit on the future of European football.

Lawwell is a board member at the European Club Association and he joined representatives from 10 other teams at the organisation's agm.

It's a key moment in the continental game as elite clubs make moves to strengthen their hold on the Champions League and Europa League, a development the ECA has opposed.

Reports have claimed a number of radical changes to the Champions League , including introducing a promotion and relegation system and moving games from midweek to the weekend.

Proposed alterations would come into effect from 2024 and the ECA met UEFA bosses at its headquarters in Nyon last week.

The outcome of Monday's ECA agm is yet to be revealed but it's likely Lawwell will fight to improve Celtic 's standing on the continent, if he is re-elected to the body's board.

The club have racked up seven consecutive Premiership titles but whoever wins this season's competition face an arduous task to reach the Champions League.

The Hoops were tasked with negotiating four qualifying rounds at the start of this season and this season's champions will be met with the same challenge.

Celtic remain on course to claim another league crown as they lead Rangers by 10 points at the Premiership summit.

The Ibrox club negotiated a gruelling path to the Europa League group stage last summer and they too will watch on with interest as the future of European football takes shape.
