Celtic Boys' Club paedo Frank Cairney loses appeal freedom bid

A senior judge has ruled a former Celtic Boys Club manager must remain behind bars ahead of an appeal against his conviction for child sexual abuse covering 20 years.

Judge Lord Menzies yesterday told lawyers acting for Frank Cairney, 84, that the Court of Criminal Appeal will consider the case on November 14.

Cairney, of Viewpark, Lanarkshire, wasn’t in court to hear the news.

The former coach for four years after being convicted at Hamilton Sheriff Court in February on nine charges of sexually abusing young footballers in the 1980s.

Cairney abused eight boys while running St Columba's Boys Guild in Viewpark and the under-16 team at Celtic Boys' Club.

It is the third time that Cairney’s legal team have appeared before appeal judges. His lawyers have twice tried to have him released from prison ahead of the appeal because of his apparent poor health.

However, judges have refused to grant the requests.

One victim said: “I’m glad he has failed consistently in his bid to be released.”
