Celtic boss Neil Lennon slates West Brom and insists he treated Oliver Burke 'too well'

Neil Lennon has branded West Brom technical director Luke Dowling "unprofessional" following his rant over Celtic's handling of Oliver Burke .

And the Hoops boss insists he treated the 22-year-old "too well" during his stint in Glasgow.

In an incredible attack earlier this week, Dowling declared the Scotland striker would never be allowed back to Parkhead while the Irishman was in charge.

Burke was drafted in on a short-term loan by Brendan Rodgers but barely featured following his departure for Leicester City.

The 22-year-old has never made any complaint about his treatment and Celtic strongly denied Dowling's allegations in a statement earlier this week.

And now Lennon has backed up the club's stance as he bit back at the Baggies.

He told Sky Sports : "Not that I was aware of. We treated him very well.

"He played a lot of games. Maybe in hindsight I was too good in treating him too well at times, compared to the rest of the group.

"I have no idea where this sort of tirade has come from. This could have been dealt with privately and professionally.

"As a club we have to defend ourselves robustly because it is totally unacceptable."

Celtic's statement labelled Dowling's comments as "ridiculous and completely inaccurate".

But Lennon ultimately shrugged off the affair, insisting he doesn't even know who Dowling is.

He added: "Without any communication beforehand. The person has come out and publicly condemned the club and myself.

"I think it is unprofessional and totally unjustified as well.

"I don't know where the justification for those comments came from. Obviously we were very robust in our response.

"I don't know who the individual was who was criticising either my style of management or the club in the treatment of Oli Burke. But there is just no foundation or evidence for that whatsoever."

Dowling had said on Monday: "Once Brendan left to go to Leicester the treatment he got from the manager that’s in place now is something we don’t expect for one of our players."
