Celtic boss Neil Lennon hits out at Steven Gerrard and queries Rangers' top dog status

Neil Lennon has queried Steven Gerrard 's claim that Rangers deserve to be top after eight games.

The Ibrox side currently occupy top spot in the Premiership after winning seven of their first eight fixtures - with their sole defeat coming against Celtic in September.

But Lennon, who has watched his side pick up just one point from their last two league games, reckons the Liverpool legend's assertion is wide of the mark.

The Hoops boss told Sportsound: "I don't know where that comes from.

"I quibble with that, we've had five away games and three at home.

"I'm always going to quibble with a comment like that."

Gerrard was in confident mood on Friday and spoke of his delight that his side are top of the pile after the first batch of fixtures.

He said: “We are under no illusions how tough it will be to stay there.

"We have to embrace the pressure but it’s always nice to sit top. We certainly deserve to be there."

The Premiership champions have the chance to return to the top of the table if they defeat Ross County on Saturday.

Rangers travel to Hearts on Sunday and face a run of seven out of nine away league fixtures if they reach the Betfred Cup Final.
