Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou dedicates cup win to "immortal" memory of Bertie Auld

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou dedicated the club's League Cup semi-final win over St Johnstone yesterday to legendary Lisbon Lion Bertie Auld.

Auld, who lived in Strathaven, died last Sunday at the age of 83 after being diagnosed with dementia.

But Hoops gaffer Postecoglou knows his memory will forever live on as he dedicated their Hampden triumph to an "immortal of the football club."

Celtic players paid a touching tribute to the beloved midfielder during the match by wearing the number 10 on their shorts, which was synonymous with Auld in his heyday at Parkhead.

Auld famously scored the winner in a 1-0 triumph over St Johnstone in the 1969 Scottish Cup final and the stars aligned as the Hoops secured victory by the same scoreline to book their place in next month's League Cup final against either Rangers or Hibs, who play this afternoon.

And after the match, settled by a late James Forrest strike, Postecoglou said: "They wore 10 on the shorts today.

"I said to them after the game that we're celebrating an immortal of this football club, an immortal of Scottish football, but we also have to understand there's sadness there, particularly those closest to him, his family.

"Hopefully today after that 90 minutes they've just got a little bit of a smile on their faces and felt better for a moment and thought about the great man.

"That's what I mean by setting standards.

"Irrespective of whether you've been at this football club for five months, like some of us, or 10 years like some, we're putting on a shirt that represents something.

"It represents not just the football club but it represents the people that helped build this football club and Bertie was one."

A minute's applause was also held before kick-off.

Celtic fans also paid their own special tribute with banners and tifo displays, one of which contained lyrics from The Celtic Song, which Auld sang in the tunnel before their European Cup triumph in Lisbon over Inter Milan in 1967.

In a nod to his Lisbon glory, in the 67th minute fans unveiled a huge display to honour the larger than life character know to many as 'Mr Celtic'.

Auld's funeral will be held on Friday.
