Celtic being sued over abuse allegation as legal action launched over historic claims

Formal legal action has started against Celtic Football Club in connection with claims of historic child abuse.

The groundbreaking move was described as “highly significant” by lawyers representing the alleged victim who claims they were a victim of an abuser at Celtic Boys Club.

The personal injuries action paperwork was lodged at the Court of Session, in Edinburgh, and names "Celtic PLC" as the defender of the civil action.

Thompsons Solicitors Scotland, which is representing 25 alleged victims of the Celtic Boys Club child abuse scandal - described it as the “largest and most insidious” in British football.

Patrick McGuire, partner with the Glasgow based firm, said: “This is a highly significant day for survivors of historic abuse in Scottish sport.

"One of the world’s largest and celebrated sporting institutions, Celtic Football Club, will now have to reckon in civil court to answer for the decades of the most serious sexual abuse of children committed by their staff and by their close affiliates."

McGuire added: “We are now in a position where Celtic’s management will appear in court to argue that these victims are owed nothing by Celtic. Shame on them.

“This is the largest and most insidious child abuse scandal in British football.

“History will judge the Celtic board past and present for their conduct but from today onwards the victims voice will speak loudest.”

The accuser - who can't be named for legal reasons - is claiming compensation for loss of earnings.

Celtic were approached for comment on Wednesday night.

In a statement in February this year, the club said: “Celtic Football Club is appalled by any form of historic abuse and has great sympathy for those who suffered abuse and for their families.

"The club is very sorry that these events took place. The abuse of young people is an abhorrent crime."

Celtic FC says it is a "separate entity" to the boys' club.

Four men associated with Celtic Boys' Club or Celtic FC have been convicted of abuse.

Serial child sex offender Jim Torbett is serving six years for the sickening systematic sexual abuse of boys - the second time he has been jailed.

Two others - a man who can't be named for legal reasons and Jim McCafferty - have also been caged for the sickening sexual abuse of children.

A fourth, Gerald King, was convicted of child sex offences but avoided jail.
