Celtic back Rangers anti-racism pledge as Peter Lawwell outlines SFA summit to eradicate prejudice

Celtic have joined forces with Rangers to back an SFA summit on eradicating racism from the game following vile incidents involving Glen Kamara and Kemar Roofe.

Clubs from across the country participated in a virtual summit on Wednesday afternoon to develop a plan on ways to combat discrimination.

It comes after the Ibrox duo were subjected to disgraceful abuse during and after the Europa League meeting with Slavia Prague.

Kamara was targeted by opposing player Ondrej Kudela while Roofe received dozens of sickening messages on his Instagram account after being sent off for a late challenge on goalkeeper Ondrej Kolar.

Scottish football has come together to support the duo, with Livingston captain Marvin Bartley and former Scotland international Leanne Ross being appointed new advisors on the governing body's Equality and Diversity Advisory Board.

A national meeting was held over Zoom on Wednesday, with clubs agreeing on a way forward.

And outgoing Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell has backed constructive talks to do more to prevent a repeat incident.

Lawwell said: “Unfortunately, across many years, numerous Celtic players and staff have been subjected to various forms of racism and discrimination.

“Whether it relates to Celtic or any other club, it is time it stopped. Racism or any other form of discrimination should have no place in football or society and we need to do all we can to eradicate such prejudice.

“As a club open to all since 1888 we will continue to do all we can to promote this hugely important message and we look forward to working with other clubs and the wider football authorities to tackle this issue.”
