Celtic are signing quality while Rangers are just about quantity and it's onward to 9 in a row - Hotline

It's not so long ago that Celtic fans were moaning that their club was falling asleep at the wheel while Rangers stacked their squad to mount a challenge for their title.

Well what a difference a week and a £7 million signing makes because after the arrival of French defender Christopher Jullien, the tone has changed pitch.

Suddenly the Hoops punters are gloating about their wealth and ridiculing Rangers’ “bargain basement” scattergun signing policy.

John Wright, Motherwell, said: “I’ve been creasing myself reading Aribo say he’s a cross between Patrick Vieira and Dele Alli. Is it stated in his contract that he has to talk mince?

“Meanwhile Celtic are spending £7 million on one defender with more millions still to be spent.

“And with Griffiths back to show Morelos how to score goals, the Quadruple Treble is in the bag already. Roll on the start of the season.”

Gary Fitzpatrick emailed: “Steven Gerrard is getting away with murder. If it was anyone else the fans would be raging with these guys brought in either on loan or on the cheap from the English second division.

“Yet the Rangers fans seem happy while Celtic are doing a great job - £7million for a new centre half, having paid £9 million for Edouard last season.

“It’s all about quality rather than quantity for Celtic. Onwards to nine-in-a-row.”

Jon White, Erskine, said: “To the caller who tried to compare Rangers’ bargain basement signings to Henrik Larsson, dream on.

“Larsson was bought for £600k, not £250k. He was already a recognised international and had scored in a World Cup.

“Your signings are not on the same planet as Henrik and your team are even further away. You lot do make us Celtic fans chuckle.”

But Steven Gordon, Glasgow, isn’t impressed by a £7m signing he’s never heard of.

He said: “Being a child of the 80s and a Rangers fan, I can’t stop playing the hit by Al Jarreau ‘Looks like Trouble in Paradise.’

“The Celtic fans will turn on Neil Lennon, and the Celtic board before Christmas.”

William Hutchison, Aberdeen, isn’t too impressed with the Parkhead club either.

He said: “As a Celtic fan I totally agree with Scott Allan calling them unprofessional. The way the club treated him was unfair and shameful and I’m glad he’s back at a club who really wants him.”

To be fair the club deserves credit for their treatment of another player, helping Leigh Griffiths recover from a battle with depression.

The comeback striker scored his second goal in as many games in Austria at the weekend and Andrew Hiddlestone, Roslin, said: “It was very brave of Leigh to speak out about his battle with depression.

“It was good of the management Brendan Rodgers and Neil Lennon to help him through and deserve a vote of confidence by standing by him. Let’s hope he’s back scoring goals regularly for Celtic and Scotland.”

The battle for the Celtic No.1 shirt is wide open between Scott Bain and Craig Gordon.

Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, said: “I believe Steve Clarke dropping Scott Bain from the Scotland team has influenced Neil Lennon’s decision in saying the No.1 spot is up for grabs this season.

“He should have instead gave Bain a vote of confidence by backing him as his No.1. Gordon’s best days are behind him and playing mind games with Bain will do nothing for the players confidence.”

Finally, a good old fashioned ‘I told you so’ from Wullie Graham, Bristol.

He emailed: “I said in the Hotline in January 2018 that Jamie Walker would soon be back up to Scotland just like Scott Allan and Jason Cummings. How right I was.

“Now back at Tynecastle after a poor showing at Wigan. These players need to realise it’s a lot harder in the English Championship than they think it is.”
