Celtic and their transfer ticking clock as Champions League signing deadline offers Ange Postecoglou wiggle room

There are some sights associated with certain times of the year - Christmas lights in December, Jack O'Lanterns in October and Nir Bitton playing centre-back in the Champions League qualifiers in July.

For Celtic fans frustration is growing as the showdown with FC Midtjylland looms without the summer rebuild having started in earnest.

Liam Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide have both come in from Sheffield Wednesday but they look to be prospects for the future while Ryan Christie, Olivier Ntcham, Kris Ajer and Odsonne Edouard could all yet be on their way out.

With just a week until facing the Danes in the second qualifying round the clock is ticking.

Each club must name an 'A list' of up to 25 players - including four club trained and eight nation trained - before each round.

The deadline for that is Thursday July 15 at midnight Central European Time.

However, there is a loophole which could benefit Ange Postecoglou if he does manage to get some new signings in the building.

The likes of Carl Starfelt and Rennes defender Brandon Soppy linked.

If those players aren't in the building by July 15, UEFA rules do allow for additional players to be registered.

The regulations state: "a club may register a maximum of two new eligible players on List A after the above-mentioned deadlines, provided the quota of locally trained players is respected. Such registration must be completed by 24.00CET on the day before the relevant first-leg match and the club’s association must confirm in writing that the new player is eligible to play at domestic level at this time".

However, Celtic will also have to contend with quarantine rules required for entering Scotland.

Liel Abada of Maccabi Petah Tikva has been linked and, since Israel is on the green travel list, would not have to isolate when he arrived unless he tested positive for Covid.

For Soppy and Starfelt though they'd be arriving from amber countries in France and Russia and would have to quarantine for 10 days.

That means they would not be available for the first leg but, thanks to UEFA's loophole, they could be registered for the second leg provided they arrive in time.
