Celtic and Rangers will 'disappear' under Super League takeover as Ballon d'Or winner fears disaster

Celtic and Rangers will "disappear" from the world stage if a European Super League is allowed to go ahead.

That's the verdict of former Ballon d'Or winner Jean-Pierre Papin as he revealed his fears for the future of football.

The game has been rocked to its core by the announcement of the controversial breakaway competition amid a barrage of anger and condemnation from UEFA, FIFA, rival clubs and fans.

And former AC Milan, Bayern Munich and Marseille ace Papin - who won the Ballon d'Or in 1991 and was World Player of the Year - suspects it would be disastrous for Scottish Premiership clubs on the continent.

Papin said: "The magic of the European Cup or Champions League is playing against the Scots, Russians or Finns for example.

"But with this Super League, that would be the end for nations like them - the so-called smaller countries of European football.

"There are certain clubs that made the history of football... I'm talking about Celtic, Ajax or Anderlecht for example. It would be a disaster to see them disappear off the football landscape entirely.

"These big clubs who are proposing this aren't doing this for the benefit of football. They will generate their own revenue and earn between four and six times what they earn today. The rich will always remain the rich and will get even richer.

"Forget the threats from UEFA, these clubs will just find a legal loophole and do what they want anyway.

"The current Champions League is a great show, but even there you can get a club who finished fourth in their league beating a club who finished third, so it's far from a Champions League. Maybe we ought to think about that too."
