Celtic and Rangers whitewash for SPFL Team of the Season sparks fury among fans

SPFL have announced the fans' Team of the Season and there was fairly common theme throughout.

All eleven players who made the cut were either from Celtic or Rangers.

Over 500,000 votes were cast over the last two weeks as supporters choose their best XI throughout the season.

Fraser Forster was selected in goals, with Jeremie Frimpong, Christopher Jullien, Kris Ajer and Borna Barisic making up the back four.

The midfield was made up of James Forrest, Ryan Jack, Callum McGregor and Mohamed Elyounoussi, with Alfredo Morelos and Odsonne Edouard leading the line.

The SPFL's decision to put the vote to the fans has been widely criticised with many bradning it a "pointless exercise" as the sheer number of Old Firm fans would result in more votes for their respective clubs.

And that's exactly how it played out with a complete Celtic and Rangers whitewash.

There was no Motherwell players included despite their third place finish and there was no place for the likes of Vaclav Hladky, Alex Gogic or Lewis Ferguson, who all had brilliant seasons with their teams.

And Scottish football supporters were not pleased when the team was released on Friday afternoon.

@crazylegsjoe tweeted: "The only thing you can take from this is that clubs with more fans, will gain more votes in public polls. Elyounoussi only played 10 league games to get voted into this."

@stevec0471 added: "No Motherwell players, surely should be at least one or two."

@Calum_Brown99 tweeted: "Thoroughly deserved place for everyone involved, and a brilliant team. No arguments from me! A superb idea by whoever was behind this. A true reflection of yet another brilliant season in Scottish football in the two club league."

@cozzybruce said: "Even as a Celtic fan I can see it's just two sets of fans voting for their own. A good argument for big Gogic of Hamilton, Ferguson at Aberdeen and the St Mirren keeper with which I can't remember his name."

@MONeil1974 added: "A completely pointless exercise, well played."

@hibeesfamily tweeted: "Announce a two team league and let the rest of us get on with it."

@melbourne88 said: "What's the point."
