Celtic and Rangers waiting game as Champions League reform talks wiped out days after ECA chief's ominous verdict

The European Club Association's general assembly has been cancelled as a precautionary measure in wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

The governing body - which carries the interests of teams represented by UEFA - were due to meet in Budapest on March 30 and 31.

The summit being wiped out will be of great interest to many within European football who are eagerly awaiting updates on radical changes to the Champions League from 2024/25.

ECA top dog Andrea Agnelli has made no secret of his desire to to push forward plans to turn the world's premier club competition into a 'closed shop' for the elite.

And the Juventus chief further irked onlookers this week with his crass comments about Atalanta's run to the last eight of this season's competition.

Agenelli said: "I have great respect for everything Atalanta are doing, but without international history and thanks to just one great season, they had direct access to the primary European club competition.

"Is that right or not? Then I think of Roma, who contributed in recent years to maintaining Italy’s ranking. They had one bad season and are out, with all the consequent damage to them financially.

"The point is how we balance the contribution to European football and the performance of a single year."

Established European clubs outwith the top five leagues are increasingly concerned over proposed changes with Celtic's Peter Lawwell and Ajax's Edwin van der Saar fighting their corner at boardroom level.

Agnelli, despite his long standing desire to shake up the Champions League, is understood to be willing to safeguard European regulars like Celtic and compatriots Rangers if his revolutionary plans are rubber-stamped.

Scotland are in line for an extra place in the UCL from the start of next season after the exploits of the pair in this season's Europa League has boost the Scottish club coefficient.

And the 43-year-old even namechecked the Premiership champions back in October.

He said: "It's right that if you perform in the international system, you stay in the international system.

"It would be great for clubs like Ajax, Celtic, (Legia) Warsaw knowing they can stay in Europe and not have to qualify via domestic system."
