Celtic and Rangers to compete for Veolia Trophy as Lyon announce pre-season tournament details

Celtic and Rangers will compete for the Veolia Trophy after Lyon confirmed the dates and fixtures of their pre-season tournament.

The competition will take place on July 16 and July 18 with the Glasgow rivals taking on Nice and Lyon in the two games.

It means that there won’t be a pre-season Old Firm clash but they will both be in with a chance of lifting the trophy.

The games will be held at the Groupama Stadium and kicks off with Nice vs Celtic on Thursday July 16.

That is followed by Lyon vs Rangers, the first time the sides have met since the Champions League group stage in 2007/08.

It's a different stadium to where Rangers played in 2007 when they thumped the then-French champions 3-0 at the Stade Gerland, before being beat by the same score at Ibrox.

Celtic will also get to reunite with Lyon striker Moussa Dembele who left the Hoops two seasons ago to return to France.

The big striker has been heavily linked with moves to England but will get to face off against his old team, as well as revisiting his rivalry with Rangers.

Dembele caused a lot of problems for Rangers during his time in Glasgow, including scoring a hat-trick in a 5-1 win at Celtic Park in 2016.
