Celtic and Rangers title fight will go to the wire as 'psychological battle' highlighted

Andy Halliday reckons the Premiership title battle between Rangers and Celtic will go down to the final day.

Ange Postecoglou reclaimed the league crown for the Hoops in his first season in charge last term as he bids to make it back-to-back successes. Giovanni van Bronckhorst came in for Steven Gerrard during the campaign and he will be going all out in his first full season to make sure his side finish top dogs. Former Rangers midfielder Halliday - now starring for Hearts - reckons the battle between the top two will be closer than every and believes it could go down to the wire.

The Glasgow rivals will clash four times this season with the games having a major say in the outcome of the league title. That's 12 points up for grabs in those meetings and while there are 34 other games out with the four derbies, the Jambos star reckons those showdowns will prove vital as he opened up on the 'psychological battle'.

Speaking on behalf of Grosvenor Sport, Halliday said: "The title race will be tighter this year than any other season. It's going to go down to the wire because they're two very good teams now and they've both improved their squads in the summer.

"Both Celtic and Rangers have good players and good managers so it wouldn't surprise me if the title race goes down to the very last day.

"The Old Firm will obviously have an impact on which way the title race goes because there's four Old Firm games in the season and 12 points to play for, but there's also 34 other games.

"Rangers vs Celtic is a psychological battle more than anything else because quite often they're played before an international break so the players want to win but it's more about how they both handle the other games than just winning the derby."
