Celtic and Rangers test event blocked as fans forced to wait for stadium return

Celtic and Rangers fans will have to wait a little longer for their return to stadiums after the reimposed coronavirus restrictions in Glasgow.

Both clubs were hoping test events would go ahead on the weekend of September 12 after Scottish rugby made the successful return with supporters inside Murrayfield for last Friday night's 1872 Cup match between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The SFA and SPFL were negotiating with Premiership clubs and the Scottish Government for the phased return of spectators for three separate test events after the international break.

But this week's reimposed lockdown rules in Greater Glasgow and Clyde due to an increase in Covid-19 cases means they will have to be pushed back until restrictions are lifted.

Rangers fans will not be allowed back inside Ibrox when they host Dundee United on September 12.

Celtic's away trip to Ross County could still be trialled with spectators that same day, but their home clash against Livingston seven days later is in doubt with these rules expected to be in place for at least two weeks.

Celtic were hoping to have supporters back last weekend for their 3-0 home win against Motherwell, but the Government rejected the proposal.
