Celtic and Rangers stars in line for end of season gongs as SFWA awards go ahead as planned

Scotland's end of season awards will go ahead as scheduled despite time being called on the season early.

It was confirmed on Monday that the Premiership season has been ended early, with the lower leagues having already been decided on a points-per-game basis.

That means Celtic have been crowned champions for the ninth season in a row, and there could be more gongs on the way for their stars, as well as those from around the country.

While PFA Scotland has opted to cancel its end of season awards, the Scottish Football Writers’ Association will dish out the same prizes they do every season.

That means there will be awards for Player of the Year, Manager of the Year, Young Scottish Player of the Year, International Player of the Year and best Media Team.

SFWA President Lindsay Herron said: “These are unprecedented times and we all would have wanted the 2019/20 season completed across all four divisions in Scotland.

“That’s not happening after Monday’s SPFL announcement. However, we feel it would be completely unfair not to recognise the performances and achievements of the leading protagonists and the best performers even although there was nearly a quarter of the season still to play.

“We’ve been honouring the Player of the Year in Scotland since 1965 when the late, great Billy McNeill was our first recipient and there is no reason to break the chain.”

Odsonne Edouard of Celtic and Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos are likely to be in line for awards after their goalscoring feats this season.

Callum McGregor is likely to be in contention too, while Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson is sure to be among the frontrunners for Manager of the Year after guiding the Steelmen to third.
