Celtic and Rangers stars' Euro call-up hopes as UEFA increase squad sizes

Scotland's fringe players and those who haven't yet made squads could have been given a major boost ahead of the Euros, with news that UEFA's national teams committee has recommended increasing squad sizes from 23 to 26.

The expansion is as a result of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on players,, and is to help managers cope if outbreaks occur during the tournament, which is scheduled to start on Friday, June 11.

It's likely to be rubber-stamped by UEFA's executive committee later this week, and could be good news for Celtic stars such as David Turnbull and Stephen Welsh, and Rangers star Nathan Patterson, who many feel should be included in squads.

UEFA is wary of the possibility of an outbreak of Covid at the finals, and the increased workload on players, caused by truncated seasons, and has already confirmed that teams will be allowed to make five substitutions rather than three, during matches.

Steve Clarke is expected to name a provisional squad in mid-May, and make his final selection at the end of that month.
