Celtic and Rangers seal Champions League boost as UEFA confirm extra Premiership spot

UEFA have confirmed two Champions League places will be in place for Scottish Premiership clubs next season.

Performances by Celtic and Rangers in European competitions over the last couple of campaigns have pushed Scotland up the co-efficient list and earned them the second spot.

The league winners will enter the competition at the third qualifying round stage while the runners up will begin in the second qualifying round.

The Old Firm clubs are in the Europa League group stage again this season and are pushing for an automatic group stage spot if they can push up the rankings again this term.

They would need to finish in the top 11 countries in Europe, and currently sit 12th.

And it now means five Scottish clubs will play in Europe from next season.

One of those five sides will be in the Europa League while another two will take part in the new UEFA Europa Conference League which will kick off next season.

The Scottish Cup winners will take the Europa League spot, unless they have already qualified for the Champions League where it will drop down to the team who finished in third place in the league.

The conference league will go to the next two highest league finishes.
