Celtic and Rangers pre season pantomime leaves Hotline rivals in knots but Steven Naismith claim is no laughing matter

It's only been a matter of days since Celtic confirmed the return of Brendan Rodgers and it's been Hotline tonic for the usual close-season lull. Some callers believe the Irishman has their Rangers counterparts running scared and others aren't so convinced.

Danny McLean, Glasgow, said: "I guess given all the talk of Rangers fans living in fear of the return of Rodgers, they shouldn’t have sold out all their season ticket allocation and bought a record amount of the new home and away strips. That sounds like real fear."

Gary Stevenson, Newtonhill, said: "Surely the Celtic supporters are wrong to suggest that they have £50million in the bank. They are searching for players in the football backwaters of Australia which suggests problems elsewhere. As for the Rangers supporters being scared of Rodgers, we are delighted. It seems that the Green Brigade is less so." John Bruce said: "Celtic fans seem a bit bewildered that Rangers supporters are more amused than anxious over the re-appointment of Rodgers. He was the winner of trophies in an SPFL with no competition, he bombed in Europe and then abandoned his devotees when a credible adversary arrived to put up a challenge? We'll gladly take our chances. Rangers fans have a great deal to look forward to. The team rebuild is well under way and the fans can't wait to see all the new additions lining up alongside the two gems who joined in January, Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin."

Bud Hay, Dumfries, said: "I like the two signings Rodgers has made so far and can't wait for the new season to start. We might do the treble again and we will be the most successful team, not the other mob so come on the Hoops."

Frank McKenna, Cumbernauld, said: "Hotline regular Alfie Mullin should be embarrassed commenting about Celtic. Does he think all the Hoops supporters forgot about his bold prediction that Celtic wouldn't beat Rangers in any other match after the first derby game? Apart from the last dead rubber at Ibrox, how did that work out for you Alfie?"

Tam Williamson, Lanarkshire, said: "Rangers are stating that Abdallah Sima is lightening fast? The only times the Brighton fans seen him moving quickly was when he was running to ensure he got to his favourite bench warming seat before someone else beat him to it.

"The biennial pantomime at Parkhead has been an entertaining sideshow. Especially with many of the home fans and the influential Green Brigade unhappy with the re-appointment of their new manager. It will keep us amused until the big kick-off."

Jimmy Murray, Edinburgh, said: "Rangers are obviously skint so why don't they sell their training ground at Auchenhowie? There is obviously nothing coming through the ranks and if there is, there’s no way the player will ever be given a chance. Celtic are the same as they should also flog their place at Lennoxtown. Kieran Tierney was the last player to make it from there and If Celtic do find a good one, first thing they do is sell him on."

Jimmy Mac, Glasgow, said: "With the signings that have and are coming into Rangers, John Lundstram must get the yard back that he has lost if he's to remain in the team. Lundstram has the quality, power and accuracy to take shots from outside the area in every game he also has the strength to outmuscle most on the football pitch, if he can put those three attributes back together on a weekly basis, he will cement his place in the first eleven."

Neil Renton, Leith, said: "I had to laugh at Steven Naismith saying he’s not going to be at Hearts to make friends. He better watch what he’s saying as he’s no even the manager yet."

Paddy Gowans said: "All these players that do all their talking about what they are going to do to the papers should stay quiet as they can't do it on the pitch and are just attention seekers."

And finally.

Andrew Lamb, Fraserburgh, said: "Whilst I don't want to go into the appalling case surrounding David Goodwillie, can I say this, the boy has been named and trashed , on several occasions now. A move to Australia would have been in the best interests of all, and quite simply, every sinner is entitled to a future , and every Saint has a past."
