Celtic and Rangers players unite in touching tribute to victims of the Ibrox disaster

Players from both sides of the Old Firm fell silent today to commemorate those who died in the Ibrox disaster on the 50th anniversary of the tragedy.

Rangers held a small service ahead of the club’s Premiership fixture against Glasgow rivals Celtic this afternoon.

Both clubs faced off against each other in January 2, 1971 when disaster struck the Ibrox Stadium.

A deadly crush on Stairway 13 at the end of the game resulted in 66 supporters losing their lives.

It was the darkest day in the history of Scottish football.

Rangers and Celtic captains James Tavernier and Callum McGregor took to the Ibrox pitch today  carrying wreaths with their club's colours pre-match.

Both sets of players have donned black armbands to remember the supporters who tragically lost their lives 50 years ago.

The words “always remembered” were also embroidered on the blue kits of Rangers for the game.

The Gers had originally planned to hold a service similar in size and scale to the one seen at Glasgow Cathedral in 1971.

But level four restrictions amid the coronavirus pandemic meant that today’s service had to be stripped back.

A major event to commemorate those who lost their lives in the tragic incident is expected to be held at a later date.

Fans have also been leaving their own floral tributes outside of Ibrox Stadium today.

One message read: “To all the 66 who died on that terrible day supporting Rangers. You will never be forgotten.”

Another said: “To all those from the Rangers family who never made it home from the game at Ibrox. We will raise a glass in your memory, our absent friends.”
