Celtic and Rangers on high alert as Champions League TV cash bounty looms after DAZN make £580m power move

Scottish Premiership title rivals Rangers and Celtic are on watch as streaming giants DAZN get ready to shake up Champions League coverage in the UK.

The 'over the top' platform are on the verge of a £580million buyout of BT Sport that will see them land exclusive rights to the richest tournament plus the Europa League and Europa Conference League on these shores.

DAZN bypass conventional broadcasting thinking as a stream only service and are owned by Sir Leonard Blavatnik. They have already established a foothold in territories across the globe.

And a move could be very good news for Scottish Premiership sides on the Continent in terms of distribution rights when it comes to broadcasting in the coming years.

Celtic landed £13.4m from TV rights from the UK market share for reaching the group stage for a second consecutive season under Brendan Rodgers back in 2017-18.

And the winners of this season's Premiership are expected to earn significantly more next season dining at European football's top table – and that was before DAZN got involved.

Figures show the winners of this season's title race will secure at least £15m upon entry with at least 21 of 32 teams earning £40m during the 2020/21 season.

BT, who have rights to all three competitions until 2024, are set to be bought out imminently after discussions with fellow giants Discovery fizzled out.

But it's understood DAZN view market domination on these shores as their next step in their grand plan and will likely go again to secure the Champions League, English Premier League and other top leagues in the coming seasons.

BT spent £1.2billion to secure a new three-year deal back in 2019.

DAZN, whose subscription is currently priced at £7.99 in the UK, has Eddie Hearn's Matchroom boxing under contract and already broadcasts Champions League exclusively in North America.
