Celtic and Rangers on alert as Champions League shake-up sparks Premier League anger

UEFA's proposed shake-up of the Champions League has sparked anger from the Premier League.

The European governing body plan to overhaul their flagship event by increasing the number of participating teams from 32 to 36.

This would lead to an expanded league table and group stage games would go up from six to ten.

And the Daily Mail claim these changes have been met with fierce criticism from England's top flight as the share of broadcast money would reduce for sides not in the competition, as a result.

The increased number of games would lead to fixture congestion putting the League Cup in jeopardy, a tournament worth almost £100million.

UEFA revealed their proposals to al all 55 member countries, including the SFA, but are still to hear their verdict from the Scottish governing body.

The Scottish Premiership has two places in the Champions League next season with Celtic and Rangers set to earn the top two spots.

Scotland might not face as much disruption as England, but the plans for the UCL group stage to carry over into the New Year might not suit clubs with the Scottish Cup campaign getting underway after the winter break.

A decision from UEFA is expected in the next couple of months.
