Celtic and Rangers 'monitoring' rising Middle East tensions ahead of Dubai training camps

Celtic and Rangers are monitoring events in the Middle East ahead of their Dubai training camps.

The Glasgow pair and Premiership rivals Aberdeen are scheduled to travel to the United Arab Emirates next week as Scottish football enters its winter break.

But tensions in the region have risen considerably following the US assassination of top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani.

Foreign Office advice has since urged UK nationals to leave Iran and neighbouring Iraq as soon as possible.

And speaking to the BBC, University of Tehran Professor Seyed Mohammad Marandi warned: "If I was a Western citizen I would leave the United Arab Emirates immediately."

A number of Celtic and Rangers players have already travelled to Dubai ahead of time.

Aberdeen, meanwhile, are set to leave on Wednesday.

A Rangers spokesperson has said the club will keep a close eye on Foreign Office advice, saying: “We are obviously aware of events in the Middle East and we are monitoring the situation.

“As a club we will heed Foreign Office advice.”

Celtic are also said to be watching events closely.
