Celtic and Rangers join new cross-border reserve competition along with Aberdeen and Hibs

Celtic and Rangers have entered a new six-team cross-border competition after withdrawing from the SPFL Reserve League.

Aberdeen and Hibs will also take part in the brand new event with Brentford and Huddersfield Town completing the line-up.

The competition kicks-off on Tuesday and will see all six clubs playing each other home and away before the top two sides contest a final to decide a winner.

Clubs will field under 21 sides but are allowed three overage outfield players - plus an overage keeper.

It comes after the quartet of Premiership clubs were among eight to withdraw from the SPFL Reserve League in the summer claiming it was not beneficial to youngsters.

Rangers lifted last season's reserve title on a dramatic final day which saw them win at Falkirk in front of a large travelling contingent of Light Blues fans to pip Celtic on goal difference.

But Gers Head of Academy Craig Mulholland said: “A lot of people have a romantic notion about what reserve football was years ago and if that was still reserve football then great.

“But you are not getting experienced players to come and teach young players. The variables in the competition was such that one week you were winning comfortably, the next week was a challenge. It is not right for developing our players."

Aberdeen youth chief Paul Sheerin was also critical of the SPFL reserve set-up saying the sporadic nature of fixtures was of no use.

Sheerin’s side welcome Huddersfield Town north tomorrow in the inaugural match of the new competition at Glebe Park.

Paul Sheerin commented “It is something a bit different for us and something we are all looking forward to.

“Coming up against the English sides was appealing, playing against a different style of football and seeing how they work.”
