Celtic and Rangers in potential plastic pitch putsch after double relegation sparks vote swing

Plastic pitches could become a thing of the past in the Scottish Premiership after Kilmarnock and Hamilton Academical were both relegated to the Championship.

Artificial surfaces have long been a bone of contention among clubs and supporters with many bemoaning the quality of games on non-grass pitches.

But there's a real chance they could be gone for good with the relegated pair two of the sides who play on a plastic surface.

Any vote would need to earn at least an 11-1 to verdict but Livingston are now the sole team in the top flight who play on a plastic pitch.

A host of Premiership sides have long railed against artificial surfaces with Celtic and Rangers the most vocal dissenters.

Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard called for a ban on them in the immediate aftermath of Jamie Murphy's serious knee injury suffered at Kilmarnock in 2018.

But despite calls for them to go they do offer clubs a vital source of income with Hamilton, Livingston and Kilmarnock able to open their doors seven days a week for youngsters to train on the surface.

Plastic pitches going will cause Killie and Hamilton problems if they do make an instant return to the top flight as they would need to install a new playing surface at a time when money is tight across Scottish football amid the pandemic.
