Celtic and Rangers in capacity crowd blow as Nicola Sturgeon reveals 'permission' still needed

Celtic and Rangers have been dealt a blow in their hopes to have capacity crowds after it was confirmed organisers will still need 'permission'.

Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed a move 'beyond' Level 0 but insists the government and local authorities must keep a handle on large events.

So while there is now no limit on large gatherings, organisers will still need to apply if crowds are more than 5000 people.

So while Rangers and Celtic will hope to have capacity crowds for their European games next week, there is no guarantee that it will definitely be allowed.

There is the opportunity for Steven Gerrard and Ange Postecoglou's sides to play in front of capacity crowds next week but Sturgeon is urging a 'cautious' return to normality.

In her statement, she said: "While we expect to see the careful return of large scale events, we will for a limited time period keep in place the processes through which the organisers of large scale events of more than 5000, and indoor events of more than 2000, will have to apply for permission.

"This is allowing us and local authorities simply to be assured of the arrangements in place to reduce the risks of large scale gatherings."

Rangers have made a number of declarations recently where they stated that they hoped to have a full crowd at Ibrox for the Champions League clash with Malmo next week.

It's likely they will apply for a full stadium and Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Government will need to make a decision on it.

Celtic will also hope to have all their season ticket holders at Celtic Park for their game against Jablonec.
