Celtic and Rangers handed cash boost but critical decision hangs in the balance

Scottish clubs have been handed a cash boost as they struggle to deal with the financial strain from the coronavirus lockdown.

Teams have voiced their concerns over long-term funding with football grinding to a halt during the COVID-19 pandemic.

But SPFL chiefs have handed clubs a lifeline by releasing funds early to sides throughout Scotland.

Premiership top trio Celtic, Rangers and Motherwell have received a sum of £375,000 plus VAT with the remainder of the top flight pocketing £157,000.

Championship sides will get £26,000, while League One clubs will pick up £2700 as League Two teams are set to land £1300.

However, the fate of the final prize money still is yet to be decided with the outcome of the current season still hanging in the balance.

The SPFL and SFA hope the season can be finished, but with the likelihood of it being extended into the summer, clubs face a delay in receiving payments from the final standings, which could cause further financial headaches.
