Celtic and Rangers given boost ahead of new season as no Premiership stars fail Covid-19 tests

No positive cases have been confirmed in the latest round of Scottish football testing for Covid-19.

Nearly 800 Premiership players were tested last week, and for the second week in a row they all came back negative, with the results confirmed today by the SFA and SPFL's joint response group.

The Premiership season is scheduled to begin on Saturday August 1, with the last competitive Scottish fixtures having taken place in early March due to the shutdown.

A statement on the SFA's website read: "The Joint Response Group can confirm that between Monday 13 July and Sunday 19 July, a total of 789 Scottish Premiership players and team staff were tested for COVID-19, with no positive results recorded.

"The Joint Response Group will provide this information weekly as part of its Return to Football strategy and for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency.

"Due to medical confidentiality, no specific details will be provided on individuals tested."

Rangers kick off their season against Aberdeen at Pittodrie on Saturday August 1.

Celtic begin their defence of the Premiership title the following day when they welcome Hamilton Accies to Celtic Park.
