Celtic and Rangers given Atlantic League green light as UEFA president reveals key demands

Celtic and Rangers have been given the go-ahead to join an Atlantic League - as long as they make it work with European competitions.

Both clubs - as well as Aberdeen, Hibs and Hearts - have been linked with joining a new Atlantic League which would see them go up against teams from Sweden, Denmark, Norway and the Republic of Ireland.

The plans were put on hold after Celtic chief Dermot Desmond admitted he wasn’t interested in the cross border league, but he was urged to changed his mind by Dave Cormack.

And now UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has given the green-light for plans to go ahead if a new deal can be agreed, but only if the league can work alongside the Champions League and Europa League.

He told the Daily Record: "At UEFA, we are thinking about regional leagues and we have been talking to the leaders of national federations about that.

"More and more countries are interested in the possibility of a regional league because that would increase the value of clubs, as well as income from sponsors and the sale of TV rights.

"UEFA, in principle, has nothing against regional leagues. The main problem is how to go from those leagues to European competitions. UEFA would have to solve that problem.

"In addition, we do not want to create some regional leagues that would destroy national championships. So, regional leagues are a serious undertaking and nothing concrete has been decided yet, but it is being considered."
