Celtic and Rangers fans given return boost as Nicola Sturgeon announces date

Scottish football fans could be allowed back in stadiums as early as September.

The Premiership season is set to get underway this weekend with games being played behind closed doors due to covid-19.

But Nicola Sturgeon has revealed a limited numbers of supporters could be allowed back in grounds from September 14, subject to social distancing.

And test events could be trialed even before the proposed date.

The First Minister announced a series of changes to coronavirus guidelines in Scotland.

Sturgeon said: "We hope that sports stadia will be able to open from that day with limited numbers of spectators albeit with physical distancing in place.

"Some professional sports events may be arranged for spectators before then with Scottish Governments agreement to test the safety of any new arrangements."

Celtic could have supporters inside Parkhead for their clash against Livingston on September 19, while Rangers could welcome fans for the first time at Ibrox against Ross County on October 10.

However, both Old Firm clubs have sold out their season ticket allocation and face the difficult decision of only letting a minority of fans back into their stadiums.
