Celtic and Rangers fans miss out on Lyon tournament as hosts trial government experiment

Lyon will not allow any Celtic or Rangers fans into their Groupama Stadium for their pre-season tournament.

Both Glasgow clubs have accepted an invite to the mini-tournament hosted by the Ligue 1 side to prepare for the new Premiership season.

The French club will allow 4,500 fans of their own fans into the ground as part of a new government experiment, but Old Firm supporters will be locked out, reports the Daily Record.

Lyon will only allow club members to purchase tickets and there will be strict rules to ensure other supporters are not in attendance.

Celtic and Rangers will face Lyon between July 16-18 and will be joined by Nice at the four-man tournament. But the two rivals will not go up against one another.

Lyon boss Rudi Garcia confirmed the news last week, he said: "It's not been easy to arrange preparation friendlies and we have opted for eight weeks to prepare for the new season.

"That will include a tournament at Groupama stadium against Rangers and Celtic, with Nice being the other team.

"The thinking behind this was it was necessary to find quality opponents in leagues that have not resumed.

"We need to prepare both for the start of the new season and the Champions League game against Juventus."

Neil Lennon's side will also take on PSG at Parc des Princes on July 22.
