Old Firm fans are being asked to take extra precautions “beyond the law” to keep themselves safe from covid infection this weekend.
Professor Jason Leitch, the Senior Clinical Advisor to the Scottish Government, appealed to Rangers and Celtic fans to take care ahead of the Glasgow clash.
Asked if it was right for the game to go ahead, Leitch, said: “I’m never going call something in the middle of a pandemic safe or unsafe.
"So events are neither safe nor unsafe, but they can be made safer.”
In a direct message to fans, he said: “So if you’re going to the Old Firm game, or you’re watching the game at a pal’s house or in the pub, try and get vaccinated if you haven’t already done so, take a test before you go out, either to the stadium, or the tube, or the pub or to your pals’”
He added: “Follow the guidance and not just follow the guidance, extend the guidance, a little bit for you, personally.
“So, even though we’ve removed the law for distancing and numbers, maybe just think about what it will be like if you’re going into that environment.”
“Keep your distance, wear your face covering a little bit more even than the law would suggest you have to.”
“So they’re not safe or unsafe, but you can definitely make them safer by your personal behaviour.”
