Celtic and Rangers eye £80million Champions League windfall as Dutch chief fires 'death of domestic football' warning

Celtic and Rangers can expect to earn up to £80million from the new Champions League format according to Eredivisie chief Jan de Jong.

But the Dutch director warns that those kind of sums will kill off competition in domestic leagues when the new format comes in.

The current setup for the Champions League and Europa League is in place until 2024 but there is expected to be a revolution after that date.

Andrea Agnelli, Juventus president and head of the European Club Association, has ruled out a breakaway Super League but has confirmed changes are coming.

And the head of the Eredivisie claims those reforms will see huge sums going to smaller leagues - but warns it could have a catastrophic effect.

De Jong said: "From 2024, when the new format of the Champions League starts, our representatives from nations of our size will earn between €70m and €90m.

"That would mean, to leagues like the Eredivisie and others, if the same club qualifies three times in a row for example, football in this country would be ripped apart. The difference between the haves and the have nots would be too big.

"It will have a huge impact. There will be 225 games instead of 125 in the Champions League and proposed weekend games would pose a threat. That will have an enormous impact on domestic leagues and reduces their importance."

UEFA are expected to confirm the format for the competition from 2024 with an announcement next month.
