Celtic and Rangers' Europa League chances rated as pivotal clashes await - Monday Jury

Will Celtic beat Lazio in the Europa League?

KEITH JACKSON: Under the lights at Celtic Park anything is possible. A point would not be a disastrous result but on top form Neil Lennon’s men could have just enough go one better.

CRAIG SWAN: Yes they will. Celtic have been sharp and impressive in the majority of their European outings this term and they have the attacking talents to sink the Italians.

GARY RALSTON: Surely, the 2-1 home victory for Cluj over the Italians on the opening day of the group stage must give Celtic confidence, particularly with a partisan Parkhead support at their backs. However, they will likely need their third European clean sheet on a row at home if they are to succeed.

GORDON PARKS: A draw would be a more than decent result against a side which is a step up from most Europa League sides. Celtic are capable of scoring against anyone but they need a huge defensively display to come away from Rome with something to show for their efforts.

Are Rangers going to snare a victory over Porto?

KEITH: They’ve got a chance given the way Steven Gerrard has this team performing in Europe. But if they get out of Portugal with another point it will have been a good night’s work.

CRAIG: Probably not because this is the toughest fixture in their group. However, Gerrard’s team are capable of claiming a priceless point if they cut out the errors which cost them in Bern.

GARY: No, the best they can hope for is a draw. Their form on the road in the group stage of the Europa League has been too flaky and individual errors, particularly in defence, have cost them dear at less intimidating arenas than the Estádio do Dragao.

GORDON: It’s a massive challenge and the smart money will be on a Porto win. Rangers can take confidence from their impressive record in Europe under Gerrard but this may be a bridge too far.

Will Aberdeen finish third in the Premiership?

(SNS Group)

KEITH: They’ll face a tussle with a Motherwell side which had been hugely impressive up until Saturday’s defeat. But, yes, Aberdeen have the extra quality and the manager to pin down third place over the course of the campaign.

CRAIG: Aberdeen have been ravaged by injuries and still sit just a point off the position at this moment. As long as Sam Cosgrove stays fit, they’ll have every chance of chasing home the Old Firm. Yes.

GARY: Yes, as they have been over the course and distance. European football apart, it might turn out to be something of an empty achievement if both halves of the Old Firm finish more than 30 points ahead in first and second, which is a real possibility.

GORDON: It’s a third spot which is up for grabs for a host of clubs and Aberdeen could be the side to take that spot but only if they can show consistency and make their display against Motherwell the yardstick.

Will St Johnstone be relegated from the top flight?

(SNS Group)

KEITH: They have to place their faith in Tommy Wright to find a way out of this early season tailspin. But it’s looking like an almighty struggle already.

CRAIG: Saints will go down if they keep serving up the type of performance which they did at the weekend in Paisley. Wright’s track record in Perth suggests he’ll find a way to turn it around and keep them up, but the past means nothing right now.

GARY: At the risk of coming over all Scouser - calm down, calm down. Four points separate the bottom four teams and not even a quarter of the season has been played. Saints have under performed, no doubt, but they have the players, managers and experience to turn it around.

GORDON: It’s too early to condemn Saints and Tommy Wright will get the team moving upwards in time, an immediate improvement is required as they have the look of a side which doesn’t know where their next win is coming from.
