Celtic and Rangers duo Albian Ajeti and Cedric Itten left out of Switzerland squad but boss hints at standby role

Celtic and Rangers strikers Albian Ajeti and Cedric Itten have been snubbed by national side Switzerland for the coming international break.

Vladimir Petkovic's men face a trip to Belgium to face the current FIFA world number one side in a friendly - before a home double-header against Spain and Ukraine in the Nations League.

Ajeti has five strikes for the Hoops in the Scottish Premiership and the best goals-to-minutes ratio in the country, while fellow Glasgow arrival Itten has begun to play more of a role at Steven Gerrard 's Light Blues.

But Petkovic opted to leave both forwards out of his squad, although he hinted they may be on a standby list in case of any Covid-related issues.

He explained: "I think we have other players who can help us instead.

"But both of them have also done well in their teams lately. I'm glad I have them in the pool of players for the future.

"We are lucky because we have a very good group of players who are on the stand-by list in case any of the squad tests positive for Covid."

Itten has four caps for Switzerland and has netted an impressive three goals - he scored a double against Gibraltar and also a goal against Georgia. Celtic frontman Ajeti has 11 caps for his country, but has only scored once against Iceland.
