Celtic and Rangers ditched from expansion talks as cross-border league plans gather speed

The SPFL have been ditched from cross-border league talks that have gathered speed amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Dutch and Belgian clubs have launched a new proposal, first discussed 18 years ago, of a possible Atlantic League with clubs from around Europe.

The plans have been resurrected on various occasions through the years with clubs from Scotland, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland all discussing a potential expansion.

And with a host of leagues being cut short due to Covid-19, there is a fresh attempt to get the idea off the ground and raise a reported £300million through TV and sponsorship deals, according to the Daily Record.

But Scotland and the likes of Celtic and Rangers are not included in any discussions this time around.

Five teams from Belgium - Gent, Anderlecht, Club Brugge, Genk and Standard Liege and six clubs from Holland - Ajax, Feyenoord, PSV, AZ Alkmaar, Utrehct and Vitesse have all thrown their weight behind the idea by funding a research study.

The league would feature ten Dutch clubs and eight from Belgium and could overtake Ligue 1 to enter the top five biggest leagues in Europe.

A statement read: "After 150 years of football, it's time to reassess our future in Belgium and the Netherlands.

"Our last European silverware was 20 years ago. The fans are longing for European glory."
