Celtic and Rangers Colt plan back on the table and could join league next season

Lower league clubs in the SPFL will vote on Celtic and Rangers Colt teams in a move that could see the bottom tier go to 16 sides.

The vote is likely to take place next month and colt teams wouldn’t be allowed to be promoted above League One.

The two clubs wouldn’t be able to play players over the age of 21.

Another option on the table is strategic partnerships between Premiership clubs and lower league sides throughout the four divisions.

The vote could see the Colt teams join in for next season, and it would also add two teams from each of the Highland League and Lowland League.

That could see the likes of Kelty Hearts and Brora Rangers find their way into the league for next year.

Celtic and Rangers have both chased getting Colt teams in the bottom tiers of Scottish football for years.

It has often been rubbished by players and staff in League One and League Two but it could be a huge boost for their hopes in the coming weeks.

B teams will be able to play in the Challenge Cup but not in the Scottish Cup or Betfred Cup and wouldn’t have any access to TV and prize money.

The changes would also see the pyramid system remain in place as it currently stands.
