Celtic and Rangers cash blow as UEFA cut Champions League and Europa League prize money after £514m loss

Celtic, Rangers and SPFL clubs will receive less prize money from Europe over the next five years after UEFA revealed a £514million loss due to the pandemic.

The govening body took a financial hit with the reduction in TV and sponsorship money from last season as the Champions League and Europa League were both put on hold.

The competitions were played to a finish, but they were shortened to one-legged ties, which hampered their cash flow. Broadcasters were handed rebates due to the reduced schedule.

And as a result, UEFA have told the SFA and other member associations that less money will be on offer to clubs for the next five years.

Meanwhile, Celtic and Rangers begin their European campaigns on Thursday as the Europa League group stage gets underway.

The Hoops will be looking to bounce back from their disappointing defeat to the Light Blues at the weekend, but face an in form Milan side.

Steven Gerrard's men will travel to Belgium to take on Standard Liege.
