Celtic and Rangers can showcase young talent in Lowland League, says EK boss Stevie Aitken

Stevie Aitken believes some of Scotland's best young talents will be showcased by Rangers and Celtic's involvement in the Lowland League.

Both sides entered a B team into the fifth tier of Scottish football this season but it proved to a hugely controversial move.

East Kilbride boss Aitken has always been in favour of their involvement and the 44-year-old thinks the Old Firm's younger players will reap the benefits.

“I’ve always been for it,” said Aitken after EK drew 1-1 with Celtic B in their opening league game of the season.

“You’ve got to showcase the talent at the two biggest clubs and they have talented players.

“Look at the crowd, there were a couple of hundred people and that’s even with the restrictions.

“They were really bright and they’ve got really good kids. Two or three of them were with the first-team today so they were probably a bit weaker than what they’d normally be.

Celtic B lost their opening game of the season against Bonnyrigg Rose (SNS Group)

“Rangers are the same. They have good, talented players and it’s great for the Scottish game to see good Scottish players.

“Some of the kids were only 16 or 17 and I’m sure Celtic will be delighted that they’ve managed to get them in a competition where they’re playing against experienced players - I’m sure it will do them the world of good.”
