Scotland’s coefficient received another boost on Thursday night as our two representatives in UEFA competition earned positive results.
Celtic’s home win over AIK and Rangers’ away draw at Legia Warsaw ensured Glasgow’s big two remain right in contention to reach the Europa League group stage.
Their efforts, plus Aberdeen reaching the third qualifying round of Europe’s second-tier competition, means Scottish clubs have racked up as many coefficient points this season than they did for the entire 2017/18 campaign.
The 4.000 points accrued thus far has our nation currently in 19th place – a rise of two spots from last year. Scotland is now above countries such as Norway, Switzerland and Sweden.
And we have amassed more points at this stage than any other association in Europe. Serbia are one spot above in in 18th while Croatia are in 17th.
There’s still a bit to go to reach the recent zenith of 15th in 2011 but to put into context, the nation was 25th just three years ago and struggling below the likes of Israel.
If the rapid progress is maintained, an extra Champions League place would be secured for the country.
Even a rise to 17th would mean our league winners would avoid the first round of Champions League qualifying – meaning a crucial later start to the season of two weeks.
Should Celtic and Rangers reach the Europa League groups again this season, then the 6.750 points total from the last campaign would likely be beaten.
UEFA award two points for a victory and one for a draw in the group stage.
However, this is divided by four as there were four Scottish clubs in UEFA competition.
Also, clubs are awarded a minimum of three points if they reach that round.
