Celtic and Rangers 'back in talks' over Colts to be included in League Two revamp proposal

Celtic and Rangers are in discussions to have their Colts teams included as part of a bumper 16-team League Two - according to a report.

The controversial proposals have long been mooted and were back on the table last summer amid Scottish football's civil war in the wake of the season-ending vote but were rejected.

Talks are now back underway and Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson is said to be chairing a committee that will explore beefing-up the SPFL 's bottom division from 10 teams to 16.

He will be joined on the working panel by Partick Thistle’s Gerry Britton, Stenhousemuir chairman Iain McMenemy and Steve Brown of St Johnstone and George Fraser of the Lowlands League.

The change in format would see the introduction of Rangers and Celtic Colts teams, two sides from the Highland League and two from the Lowland League who will enter the professional ranks.

The Daily Mail report the Glasgow rivals will stump up an initial £125,000 to join the league set-up, with further payments bringing it to a final total of £1m.

There remains sceptics over the proposals but there is also an appetite from many within the Scottish game who believe a revamped bottom tier will benefit more than just the big two.

But the revised proposals will still have to pass the voting threshold of 75 per cent across the Championship and Leagues One and Two plus 11 teams in the Premiership.
