Celtic and Rangers 'B' teams will provide great games in Lowland League, says East Kilbride boss

Stevie Aitken is relishing the chance to take on Rangers and Celtic ‘B’ teams next season after their admission into the Lowland League next season received formal approval.

A majority of clubs from the fifth tier of Scottish football voted in favour of admitting both sides into an expanded league next season and the plans were rubbed stamped at the Lowland League AGM last week, with the Old Firm sides entering sides for one season only.

It means Kilby will be welcoming the best youngsters Glasgow’s big two have to offer next season and Aitken, who was a big advocate of the move before the vote, is looking forward to it.

He said: “I think it will be exciting for the whole of the Lowland League.

“That’s the reason they got my vote.

"Without a sponsor for the league and with the way the world is at the moment, I don’t think there’s any money kicking about that would help the division.

“But bringing Rangers and Celtic into it is going to highlight the division, there will be more focus on it, more people are going to watch it.

“We’ve got some great games against them to look forward to now.

“I know some people have got different views on it and that’s understandable, but I think it’s great for the division.”

The new Lowland League season kicks off on Saturday, July 17 and fixtures are expected to be released later this month.
