Celtic and Motherwell pay tribute to 'true legend' Phil O'Donnell

Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson has paid tribute to former Fir Park hero Phil O'Donnell on the 13th anniversary of his untimely death.

O'Donnell passed away on December 29, 2007, after collapsing on the pitch during a match against Dundee United at Fir Park.

Motherwell and Celtic have both paid tribute to the star on social media today.

While Robinson said there wasn't much the club could do in actual tribute to their fallen star, he said O'Donnell is in everybody's thoughts.

Robinson said: "I'm not so sure about that. I didn't know Phil personally but the way people speak about him and how highly he's respected usually we do something but obviously in these times I'm not sure what you can do.

"He is obviously well remembered, he's in everybody's thoughts, and was a true legend at the football club."

Celtic have also paid tribute to Phil O'Donnell on social media (Social media)

O'Donnell started his career at Motherwell in 1990, played a major role in them winning the 1991 Scottish Cup, and moved to Celtic in 1994, where he played for five years, before moving to Sheffield Wednesday.

Injury ravaged O'Donnell's career down south, but he was given a chance to resurrect his career by Motherwell in 2004 and played for three seasons before his untimely death, aged 35.
