Celtic and Burnley linked Thomas Robert's Airdrie absence explained by boss Ian Murray

Airdrieonians opened up their pre-season campaign with a last-gasp win over Cumbernauld Colts this afternoon.

But there was a notable omission from the squad with in-demand French winger Thomas Robert absent at Broadwood.

The 20-year-old is set to go on trial at English Premier League side Burnley and has previously been linked with a move to Celtic, having spent time on trial there last season.

Robert is due to head down south for a two-week trial with Sean Dyche's side in the coming weeks, but Murray revealed his young star still needs to get up to full fitness with the rest of the Airdrie squad.

Asked about Robert's absence from the squad at Broadwood, Murray explained: "Thomas is still with us.

"He needs to do a little bit extra work on his own because he was a wee bit behind on everyone else.

"But Thomas is a fit lad anyway, so he'll be fine.

"We'll just need to see where he is in the next 7-10 days with regards to coming back into the bigger group."

Robert still has a year left on his contract at Airdrie, having joined the club from Montpellier last summer.

Airdrie managed okay without Robert as they won their NL Cup semi-final 2-0 against Cumbernauld Colts with late goals from Jordan Allan and Calum Gallagher.
