Celtic agree Liam Shaw deal as Sheffield Wednesday youngster kicks off summer rebuild

Highly-rated Liam Shaw has agreed a pre-contract deal with Celtic, according to Yorkshire Live.

The teenage midfielder has enjoyed a breakout season at boyhood heroes Sheffield Wednesday, making 15 appearances for the Hillsborough side.

The Owls were desperate to retain the promising youngster in the wake of intense interest from the Parkhead club.

But it appears they have been unsuccessful, with Glasgow Live’s sister site reporting he has now chosen to move to the Premiership champions, becoming the first player in what is expected to be a summer squad overhaul after a shambolic season on and off the pitch.

The versatile 19-year-old is able to play in a number of positions across midfield and defence, and has scored one goal so far this season.

The Hoops will be able to take advantage of cross-border compensation rules to pay a much lower fee for the player, with a one-off £300,000 payment branded a 'bargain'.

Speaking earlier this year on contract talks, Shaw told Yorkshire Live: "It's my boyhood club. It's a dream to play for this club.

"It always is every time I go out there.

"It would be perfect to stay at this club.

"We are in talks and my agent is sorting that (the contract) out. Hopefully, it will be sorted out sooner rather than later."

Celtic sit 18 points behind rivals Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership, but Neil Lennon's side can cut that gap to 15 with a win over Aberdeen on Wednesday.
