Celtic 2 Charlton 1 as Albian Ajeti and Karamoko Dembele strike in convincing win - 3 takeaways

Dominant Celtic made it consecutive wins to kick-off pre-season with a 2-1 victory over an experimental Charlton side.

Goals from Karamoko Dembele and Albian Ajeti netted in the first half for the Premiership side before the Addicks mounted a late fightback as ex-Hearts man Conor Washington found the net.

Celtic aren't new to having lots of the ball but the intent has certainly been ramped up since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou.

The intimate surroundings of Dragon Park allows onlookers to hear every roar and Parkhead stars are urging their team-mates to move the ball with verve and swagger.

Nigel Adkins' side were overmatched and Celtic didn't appear in the mood to take it easy on them even after making a raft of changes at the break.

Dembele's opener was well finished after Adam Montgomery's cross broke to him and he tucked home with aplomb from a tight angle.

Celtic doubled their lead before the break when Dembele's flick down the right released Anthony Ralston who dinked a ball into the box for Ajeti to nod home.

And it was the side from Scotland who continued to pile it on in the second period and sub Odsonne Edouard should have scored from close range after good work from Ryan Christie.

Mikey Johnston then cracked the crossbar from the edge of the box after he jinked and weaved himself a half yard of space.

Washington's goal breathed new life into Charlton who piled on the pressure but Celtic held on to secure the win after the same player was expertly denied by Scott Bain.

Postecoglou suffered a late fright as Edouard exited in the final minutes due to an apparent niggle.

Go on, Albi!'

That was the cry from McGregor on multiple occasions urging the Swiss striker to get back and close - an instruction he carried out flawlessly. Ajeti looks lean and mean but his instant success under Postecoglou is down to more than just a good fitness regime.

His game is all about spinning in behind the defence rather than coming short and linking the play. Lucky for him the other nine outfield players are asked to be the creators and that allows the former West Ham to focus on finishing. It's working out well so far.

Full backs have new role

A lot has been made out of Manchester City's Joao Cancelo's rampaging right-back role that often sees him end up in a central position as he moonlights as an auxiliary midfielder.

It would be remiss to compare Anthony Ralston or Greg Taylor to Pep Guardiola's secret weapon but the Celtic manager demands his defenders get forward and also slot inside to open up more space for the wide men. Montgomery and Dembele were the benefactors against the overmatched Addicks.

Perfect pep talk

Postecoglou isn't one for screaming and shouting and spent most of his afternoon on Saturday chilling on a seat that appeared more primary school assembly than Celtic pre-season friendly.

But the 55-year-old knows how to press the right buttons as he gave Dembele some key instructions during a break in play minutes before the 18-year-old burst into life and slotted a neat finish from a tight angle. Dembele isn't lightning quick but his vision and guile make him a real threat against any opposition.
